Code of conduct for club officials and volunteers
Code of conduct for club officials and volunteers
The essence of good ethical conduct and practice is summarised below. All volunteers must:
Remember that your responsibility is to teach the love of the game, not a win at all costs attitude.
Be reasonable in your demands on young player's time, energy and enthusiasm. Remember that they have other interests and commitments to fulfil and that players respond best to encouragement. Don't ridicule or yell at them. Give them space to make their mistakes, particularly young captains.
Put thought into your practices so that they are both meaningful learning experiences and fun. Make sure everyone has participated positively and gained some learning points, not just the stars. Try to ensure that there are good supplies of appropriate equipment for practices and matches.
Try to stretch the most able players, but be careful not to let them overdo it. Be particularly careful to not overbowl young fast bowlers or allow anyone else to do so either even if it is the Captain. Consider the well-being and safety of participants before the development of performance
Remember that you need 11 for a team and more for a squad. Make sure that all your players get an opportunity to participate and enjoy matches not just the stars. Take the chance of an 'easier' game to give other players their head rather than pulverising the opposition.
Remember that you have a duty to teach a respect for the spirit of the game, not just it's laws. Do not tolerate dissent, sledging, intimidation or any forms of gamesmanship. Encourage respect for the officials, the opposition and all your own team members.
Remember that your players' welfare and behaviour is your responsibility the whole of the time they are at cricket, not just when they are on the field of play. Take proper safety precautions, take responsibility for the injured player, and don't leave before the last child has been picked up. Encourage them to socialise with the opposition and to thank helpers after the match.
Make sure you are a figure young players can respect. Be fair and firm. Be efficient in administration. Be on time.
